SoAustin.Net Support: Your Web Site

Location - The public will be able to access your web site as <http://yourbandname.soaustin.net/>. If you have made arrangements with us for domain hosting, then you will use something such as <http://www.yourbandname.com/> instead.

Content Policies - There are two basic ground rules with regard to content. First, only post materials that are yours or that you have permission to post. Otherwise the copyright police will be all over our ass. Besides, if you are a songwriter, you know how it's bad karma to rip off other people's work. Second, please be considerate of network load. This means no streaming videos and no ...ummm... adult content.

Website Maintenance - You may upload materials to your web site using an FTP program. If you don't have one already, we can recommend fetch for Apple Macintosh computers and ws_ftp for Windows PCs. If you are willing to purchase a commercial product, consider one that supports secure uploads, such as VShell.

Once you have your FTP program setup, use the following procedure to add documents to your web site:

Website Statistics - One of our special features is that we generate statistics on your web site traffic. The statistics are updated every night. To access the statistics, just stick stats/ (don't forget the slash) at the end of your web site URL. For example, if your web site is called http://yourband.soaustin.net/, then you can view your web site statistics by visiting http://yourband.soaustin.net/stats/.

Website Logs - If you want even more information, detailed logs of all your web site traffic are available for you to retrieve and view. To see your logs, log into the server, change to the website directory, then change to the logs directory. You will find there the following files:

access_log All traffic for today.
access_log-YYYY-MM.gz All traffic for the period month MM year YYYY.
error_log Errors for today.
error_log-YYYY-MM.gz Errors for the period month MM year YYYY.

The log files ending in .gz are compressed using gzip compression. Visit the gzip Home Page for more information, including downloads for Windows and Macintosh.

That Cover It? - If you have any questions about this stuff, please email us.
