i talked to a red cross volunteer about the best way to contact
someone at the astrodome (or any other shelter). she suggested that
we first try the numbers that we have listed on our reference
sheets. if we're unable to get through that way, she suggested we go
to www.redcross.org and find the number for that city's local
chapter. in making that call, she suggested we identify ourselves as
a red cross volunteer in austin trying to get through to (that
city's) shelter to make contact with an evacuee and ask if they have
a direct number. she said she's had some success with this
approach. once you get through to a shelter, it's whatever their
policy is as far as the actual contact method, i.e., message board,
paging, etc.

If someone finds a loved one at the Astrodome (Houston), what's the
procedure for contacting them if they don't have a personal phone
number or email addy?
Yesterday some other volunteers were talking about how to do this --
something about calling a number and asking to leave a message on a
(physical) message board. It could be helpful if someone who knows or
has done it before could send the procedure (w/ phone number) to the
list so we'd know exactly what to tell people.
Thanks!
