Subject: [Katrina-IT-Volunteers] A Few Questions to Help Out Newbies

Hi All,

I am a newbie to this list as well. I've read all the info on the
website,
and I THINK I know how everything works, but would one of you who have
been
through the volunteer check-in process mind sending step by step details
to
the list? I think that might help some of us who haven't been to the
volunteer center yet.
This changes daily. The volunteer registration is at 2nd and
San Jacinto on the SW corner. There's a big sign out front. I lucked
out and found an open parking meter about a block down. Someone also
said the top floors of the garage there were free to volunteers but you
might check that before going in.Otherwise parking for volunteers is at
the garage at 5th and Red River (this lets you out at the back of the
convention center). You have to tell them you are volunteering and have
a designated time and position for them to let you in.

Some other questions:

**Are 10 volunteers per shift for the public computers still needed now
that
there are less evacuees?

I think Dale should probably answer this but since they need people
on Public Access computers as well as on the kids sites it may still be
a good #.

**What shifts (or hours) are generally understaffed or overstaffed?

My experience that weekdays probably fall a little short. I've
worked out a deal with my boss to work either the 8-11 or 3-7 shifts and
make up time missed.

**Is there any kind of orientation or should new volunteers expect to
hit
the ground running? There should be others around that have been
working, at least, the previous shift. I think that's what the Shift
Leaders are for. Try to find someone like that before you get started.
Also as noted in a previous e-mail it's good to know where the chaplains
and counselors are located before you start.

**What is parking like down there? The garage at 5th and Red River (see
above)

I haven't been there since Friday so anyone seeing this feel free to
correct any misinformation since things change so rapidly.

Thanks for the info and thanks for providing such a fantastic service to
the
evacuees!

Kind regards,
Lauren Hug
