[Katrina-IT-Volunteers] FAQs

Hi Cindy,

So here is my question.

When I was there yesterday morning they said you could not get registered
(intake) unless you had a yellow card. But supposedly you were not allowed
into the convention center unless you had a wrist band.

This is a bit of a catch-22. Can't get in until you have a wrist band,
can't get a card until you get in.

So which is it. Get a card first or get registered at intake first?

We were registering people anyways and giving them wrist bands, when we had
them. I told people to be proactive and to the info booth and FEMA and Red
Cross. The canned answer was that they were suppose to come back the next
day and try again.

It is best to be told "no" numerous times rather than not trying at all.

Or, it is easier to ask for forgiveness then ask permission!

Deborah

5) What is the process that the evacuees must go through to get benefits
here?

As of Friday, 9/9, once evacuees are admitted to and settled at the
Convention Center, they need to go to some desks that are located to the
north of the Hair Salon. At these desks they are asked to fill out a
questionnaire and are given a sheet of paper that identifies the steps they
should go through here to get various benefits. I believe this is based on
need. Then they are issued a yellow card with a large number on it.

This number determines when they are admitted into the halls at the SW
corner of the building where benefits are actually being distributed. For
example, at one point today, I believe they were taking people with numbers
less than 600.
