[Katrina-IT-Volunteers] Yet more confusion at registration and
other things

I think I missed something in this thread, but am jumping in. That
database on the intake computers is a city database so the city database
folks in room M9 - Mezzanine Level (I think they're still there) should
be notified. They are a little proprietary about their office, but they
need to know about problems like the one you describe. I can forward your
e-mail to them.
Glad you found Annell to help train you. She knows what she's doing. I
heard there were a significant amount of new evacuees processed today and
you all got real busy, but the Red Cross shift leader at the intake
computers last night told me he thought the convention center wasn't
going to get too many more. So maybe they didn't have time to prepare
with the wristband issue. This is such a huge disaster that things like
that may be changing on them on very short notice. There should have
been a Red Cross day shift leader at the intake computers, but sometimes
you just have to take things into your own hands to get problems fixed as
we've discovered. We're also looking for a way to consistently let the
evacuees know that they weren't entered into a Red Cross or FEMA database
at intake, but there has been so much chaos and so little activity for
new intake that the ball got dropped.
The IT Control Center is in M7 and takes care of hardware and network
issues. The public computers are in Living Area 2. Grab a map next time
you're in there and look in that area of the map.

This was my second time at the registration area. Which is no longer in
the back near the cafeteria. It is now in the front of the convention
center. Much better location. I kept getting different information on
what I was suppose to tell new evacuees. First the were suppose to
register and then get a yellow index card with a number. Then they could
not register unless they had a yellow index card. But the were not being
allowed in the building if the did not have a wrist band. I have not
worked the other area and I am not really sure I know which of the
computers inside the dorms is even the correct one. I can never seem to
find anyone to direct me to them. I was suppose to work them today but I
did not know where or who to talk to. I found someone at registration
who knew about Freenet and I ended up working there. Dale's sister
trained me on the latest intake procedures on the computer. I found
errors with the application but no one knew who to contact to fix them.
There are problems with updating saved intake forms. Some of the fields
will update and some do not. I had some people who had been at the Tony
Burger Center and were in the computer but there was hardly any of there
information. We tried to update their records but ended up creating new
ones. Therefore these people are in the database twice. I wrote down
the info in someone's notebook. I can not think of her name at the
moment but she had on a red bandana. IT control? Never knew it existed.
