Just a note to let you know that someone on the list has come to the
evacuee's aid to fix her wayward computer and another someone came to the
aide of the lady who needed some one-on-one computer assistance at her
apartment complex's public computers (I posted that a month or two ago and
response was immediate). Emily's and I are still updating the evacuee
resources pages on the Free-Net web site regularly and there have been a
couple of regular volunteers at the Hearthside evacuee temporary housing
project.

Also have an offer of help refurbing 4 or 5 older computers, but we're
deciding what minimum requirements to ask for. You'll probably hear more
from us about that in the next day or two.

Last, some UT students took on the Hearthside project as a semester project
and produced a web page. It's still a little glitchy right now (on the UT
server), but will be moved to our web site soon and smoothed out.
Meanwhile, you should take a look at their awesome work:

Subject: [Katrina-IT-Volunteers] Evacuee needs computer repair help

Can anyone help a lovely lady fix her home computer? It's okay with her if
someone takes it away to work on it. She thinks it has a virus. It's an HP
with Windows ME purchased in 2000. Her son worked on it some, but couldn't
fix it. She says now it just gives her "a black screen with a lot of white
typing on it that doesn't make sense" to her. It sounds like she has her
software and operating system CDs.

She's in south central Austin near Oltorf and Pleasant Valley. If you can
help out, give me a call or an e-mail and I'll put you in touch with her.

Also - There are some evacuees asking their case managers if there are
refurbished computers available somewhere for Christmas presents for their
kids. If you have any or can wipe drives and refurbish a few, let me know
that as well. I think there are four requests.
