Ray - Yes! We have some opportunities north and south and central east:
Huntington Meadows Apartments (community room - 3 computer lab right now) to
work with the case managers there still helping evacuees get services (there
are about 40 families there). It's at 7000 Decker Lane. We want the case
managers to be able to pass evacuees to volunteers for further follow up on
certain web-based information sources or other items of interest, and also
to help the residents get used to using computers (we have great exercises
like mousercize and Learn2Type). There are several church groups who are
working with this site as well and have been very supportive of this lab.
Hearthside (2 computers, 4 PICs)- 7101 I35 North - very flexible hours -
this is a short-term assignment since the site is only for temporary housing
of evacuees right now. We'll have an excellent web site created by UT
students available to look at tonight or tomorrow I hope - about the needs
of the computer lab there - mostly volunteers to keep the lab open (they
won't keep it open without someone there to monitor it, help the adults use
the computers, or provide activities for the kids after school or just be a
helpful person).
Non-Katrina related volunteering is available at the lab where our offices
are located (DeWitty Center, 2209 Rosewood), for open lab hours to teach
mouse and keyboard skills with web-based training programs, and to teach
Intro to computer, windows, e-mail, and Internet classes in January,
February and/or March. Also Intro to Access and Intermediate Access
(usually 4 sessions each). We have lots of curriculum and handouts.
Also at Garden Terrace Apartments (converted from a nursing home at 1015 W.
William Cannon) work with an Americorps VISTA there who manages the computer
lab (8 computers, I think). Garden Terrace is housing encompassed by a ton
of social services which get homeless people off the street and on their
feet. The residents are actually very computer-savvy! Very good VISTA,
too.
I have contact info for all of these folks if any of that interests you. I
can always use help in our office, too. Thanks!

Subject: [Katrina-IT-Volunteers] still volunteer opportunities?
I haven't done much volunteering since the Convention
Center shelter closed, and was wondering where the
current opportunities are, and who I should contact.
Thanks,
ray
